Buena Vista Social Club es el nombre que recibe este extraordinario grupo de músicos y el álbum, grabado en sólo siete días en 1996 en los estudios EGREM de La Habana, de los años 50. La atmósfera de las sesiones de grabación dejaba claro que algo muy especial estaba ocurriendo. Sin embargo, nadie podría haber predicho que Buena Vista Social Club se convertiría en un fenómeno mundial: recibió un Grammy en 1997 y, con 8 millones de copias vendidas, superó en ventas a cualquier otro disco del mismo género. La aclamación del álbum original ha elevado a los artistas (incluidos Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González y Omara Portuondo) a la categoría de superestrellas, inspiró una película premiada de Wim Wenders y ha contribuido a popularizar el rico patrimonio musical de Cuba. Producido por Ry Cooder para World Circuit, la calidad atemporal de la música y el puro entusiasmo de los veteranos intérpretes han asegurado que esta pasará a la historia como una de las grabaciones emblemáticas del siglo XX.
