Rediscovering Cara Records: Rare 1970s-1980s Cassettes Now at Del Bravo Record Shop

At Del Bravo Record Shop, we’re always on the hunt for hidden musical gems—and we’ve just added a selection that’s steeped in San Antonio’s rich Latin music history. We recently acquired rare cassettes from Cara Records, a Latin record label that thrived in the 1970s and 1980s. Founded by Bob Grever, Cara Records gained fame for signing some of the most influential Tejano artists of the time, including Selena, whose early career began with this label!

A Little Selena History

Cara Records was instrumental in the early days of Tejano music, sometimes even referred to as the "Motown of Tejano." Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, shared how her journey with Cara Records began. He had taken Selena to Sugar Hill Studios to record a demo and then visited Cara Records' San Antonio office. Bob Grever was out of town, but his father, Charlie Grever, and Tejano songwriter Luis Silva were there. When Charlie heard Selena’s demo, he didn’t hesitate—he signed her to Cara Records on the spot!

Our Cara Records Collection

Our new cassette inventory features music from a variety of Cara artists, each with their own unique style. Here’s what we currently have in stock:

  • Quemada
  • Irene Rivas
  • Regulo Alcocer
  • Ramiro Leija

These cassettes are pieces of Tejano and conjunto history, and we’re excited to share them with our community.
